P.T.O Winch mystery.

Post by cacheton »

Hey everyone, new to the site and I had a question, well one of many but for now Id like to know what winch would fit my truck. I picked up a 70 w200 power wagon with a 318 with a 4 speed tranny. Its got p.t.o but no winch. I was wondering if anyone knew what model winch would go on that truck and where could I find one. Appreciate the help. Hope to figure out how to get pics of the truck posted here on the site, I got plenty but I cant figure out how to resize images.

My 70 W200 came factory stock with a Braden LU-2 winch
Dennis Sherman has a complete set-up including bumper and frame extensions...great guy to deal with.

My winch came off a 72 W200......It's also a Braden LU-2
I think those are rated at 8000lbs
The flat fender WM300 1ton power wagons I believe used a different version of Braden rated at 10000lbs.

I think the standard factory winch for a W200 would have been a Braden LU-2. My '66 W300 has an LU-2. I had a '65 W300, which I recently sold, that was equipped with the Braden MU-3, which is a larger and higher capacity winch than the LU-2. There's a pic of the truck and winch on the for sale listings on this site - look for '65 W300.

Both of these winches used the same pto unit, an Arrow Gear, I think. So in addition to the pto, you'd need the various mounting brackets, frame extensions, pto driveshaft, winch, pto control lever or cable, etc.

These show up on Ebay occasionally.

I think you're right John. The MU-2 was the heavier version used on FFPW.

Possibly one of the greatest scores I got in my life was about six years ago I bought a running 72 W200 318/727 with a divorced 205 and LU-2 PTO winch for $400. Also had a Dana 70 front, 60 rear. :dance

I still have the 205 & the winch on my 78.

Cacheton: Have you looked or posted on any of the powerwagon sites?

The LU 2 was the standard winch on the "W" series trucks. One misconception about them is that they were rated for 8,000 lbs. Braden rated the LU 2 for 10,000 lbs; however, Dodge down rated them to 8,000.

That's good to know. Why did Dodge do this? If owners went by lesser figure then fewer breakage/warranty issues maybe? Or to make the WM300 appear to have a better set-up? :thinking

Nice! Would the PTO hook-up be on the driver's side like my LU-2? This looks like a mirrored image (reverse).
Also see a hydraulic version too! :Thumbsup
