Any difference in 318 air filter housings?

Post by rjmeuer »

Hey guys, need some experienced help here. I'm trying to fix a problem with WIX filters cataloging. Thanks to Doug(digdoug) the problem came to my attn that WIX (which is NAPA and Carquest filters) are showing a 2020 filter for his 67' 318's when it should be a 2041. This is apparently a big problem, so if any of you have a 2020 filter on your truck, check the fit.

Here is what Doug had to say about the matter;
"Here is the problem with the 2020 air filter,as I observe it. It is too short to seat fully at the top and bottom flat surfaces of the filter houseing. What compounds the problem is that it has the same inside diameter as the raised portion of the filter housing lid and bottom. This makes it APPEAR to fit because the inside of the filter is makeing contact with these raised portions of the air filter houseing.
Over time the filter settles into the bottom of the houseing and leaks around the top. Before it settles it leaks around the inside diameter of the filter ,as this area of the filter was not designed with a smooth seating surface ."
My question is, is there any difference between any of the filter housings from year to year on our trucks? Also, if any of you know, do 318's in other vehicles use the same filter housings? I would like to check them too.

Thanks for the help.

The 2 bbl filter housing should use the same filter from at least 65 up into the 70s...
I know that the my 73 Scamp 2bbl 225 housing is the same as filter as the v8 with the
2bbl in those years and I used the same filter on my 65 Bel with a poly in it though the
poly had a stromberg housing and a differant housing that clamped the carb
around the throat in stead of the later housing that held the housing to the carb with only
the wing nut on top that was used with the carter carbs.....WIX number I have been
using is 42020 and the fit seems just fine.....
I still have a poly/strom type housing around, I'll check it when I get a chance......

There might be two types of filters for the LA318 motors. I've seen two different types of housings depending on which 2 barrel carb you have. I know there are two different housing, but not sure if the filters are the same or not.

I'll have to check when i get back to the shop if i remember.

i have seen 3 different variations. cant speak if the housing was original or not to the truck, but... the stromberg filters are a smaller diameter then the carter filters, an i have seen 2 different housings for the carters, they look the same, but the filters are different hieghts. diameter is the same, but top to bottom is different by about 1/4 to 3/8". i only noticed this when i bought the taller filter for the short housing, it didnt fit too well. i wish i could remember 100%, i think the difference in strom versus carter i noticed on the first 66 when i robbed the carter and air cleaner off a parts truck, also a 66. the hieght difference came in, i think, when i tryed to put a left over 66 carter filter on my 69 with a carter. wound up having to go down and buy one listed for the 69.

Which reminds me of when I put an aftermarket breather in the place of the OEM dual snorkel on my 69 GTX. I had to use a longer threaded rod. When I shut the hood the first time, that said rod put a nice bubble-dent in my hood. :banghead
This was back in 84 when you could get running big block B-body for about a grand. Back in the day!

This third picture has some different carbs and attachments.
from left to right.
1. this is a carter that I robbed the throttle shaft from. It has a short bolt(too short for my air filter houseings)
2. another carter (spring on throttle shaft, indicating its newer) this carb and the air filter housing in the background were on my 67 d300 when I got it. It had a 2020 Napa(42020 Wix) filter in it,and was dirty on the carb side :pale
3. this is a NOS Stromberg ,Manual choke carb(this is the same model carb as in the w200s pictured above) It has a longer bolt that fits my air filter houseings.
4.This is a Stromberg ,manual choke carb off a 64 w200. It uses the clamp on type filter that Jeff spoke of.

Here are a couple pictures of the different bolt lengths. The longer one is what I have on my 67s
I think the shorter bolt is for later year houseings that have heat riser function? What do you guys think?

I'll try to get some this week. My housings are much larger in diameter than these.
