Speedometer Issues

Yesterday, I was cruising up the road and I started getting this WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!! Loud A noise coming from the speedo cable behind the gauges. The needle was jumping crazy. So i climbed under and unhooked the cable from the trans.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this and if it was the cable or the speedo itself. Im thinking the cable may just have come loose from the gauge.....

I had the same problem on the 65 D200. The cable needed to be lubed. I unhooked the cable at the instrument panel, pulled the metal cable out that is inside the spedo cable itself and then coated it with motor oil. I then reinserted the cable in back into the spedo casing. I had to twist it a few times to properly seat into the transmission housing. It works now good as new.

I had this same problem. I didn't try the lube, but I replace the speedo and it fixed the problem for 3 years. Now its back, so is it the cable or the speedo going out again?

I haven't pulled mine apart yet, but I will let everyone know what i find.

Same issue with mine. A little oil down the speedo cable housing and the noise is gone.

very common and always is worse when the weather turns cold.

Had to do my 68 Pontiac in November.

Putting some lube down the cable is usually only a temporary fix though. There is always dirt, etc down iside the cable sheathing that will gum up again in time. If you can, pull the entire cable out of the sheathing, clean it well and lube the entire length with white lithium grease. Then slide it back into the sheathing and hook up.

I read this post early today (1/22) so I decided to lube my speedo too. I forgot what a hassle it is to pull gauge assembly out far enough to reach in with the oil pressure pipe hooked up. I use MotorKote to lube everything. Speedo needle holds perfectly still and zero noise. Spendy stuff but works better than anything I know of. www.motorkote.com... John, Tyler, TX

i always used dry graphite lock lube. cleaning the housing is recommended. i always bust it loose at the gauge and at the trans and just flush it with engine cleaner, then blow it dry with compressed air. once its clean and dry i use the squeeze bottle to push a few squirts down the pipe, then coat the insert. its messy, so i advise some latex gloves.
