Brake light switch

Post by gtxgts1969 »

Does anyone have the part number and place I can purchase a new brake light switch?
This switch is mounted on the lower steering column and activated by the brake pedal. My brake lights stay on intermittently when the brake pedal is released.

If it is working intermittently, then take a look and check to see it is adjusted properly.

Otherwise Borg-Warner S284 is the most commonly used part, but you might also look
at Borg-Warner S237. S284 looks very much like the original, but it snaps in instead of
threading in. So the bracket has to be bent to adjust the switch. I haven't tried the
S237 switch, but it is listed as an alternative and it also threads in. It doesn't look as
original, but looks like it would install better than the snap in one and how often do you
look under there anyway?

Both should be readily available at the parts counter.

Will the S237 with the connectors on the end of the switch still work the same as the S284 with connections on each end?

It should, there is a fair a mount of play in the wires, you are only changing the angle they attach at.

For some reason, I had to add a washer to space it out a slight bit and now my lights work perfect. You could try that if its already adjusted out.

SL136 is coming up as an Echlin hydraulic switch, rather than a mechanical switch.

Yep, sorry about that :withstupid. SL778 is the right # for the mechanical switch.

Anyone know if some of our trucks came with a hydraulic brake light switch? All of the books show a listing for both types.

The Echlin SL778 appears to be identical to the Borg-Warner S284 I mention above that snaps in, verses the stock threaded design. I would sure like to find a source for the correct threaded switch.

Can someone post a picture of what the original threaded one looks like?

I had the same problem and attached a rubber bump to fix it.

without it you will not have brake lights! when the pedal is at rest, the button is pressed and your lights are off. but when you press the pedal, the button is release which connects the circuit and turns on your lights!

i just went threw a few boxes at carquest and came up with one that fits perfectly. the screw diameter is pretty standard.
