68 NP435 - any gearing changes available?
I'll be yanking the trans to go through it completely this winter. I am wondering if there is any option for changing the gearing to make a usable 1st gear (rather than it operating like a 3 speed while starting in 2nd). Essentially bumping each gear higher?

Hey Shawn, I think the simple answer is Nope! I've got so accustom to starting in 2nd that a few months ago I had a full load of tile in the bed, and started in 2nd...forgot I had the granny.

Thanks Chris, I thought I'd ask. I agree that it has come in handy. It doesn't hurt to look into it since it will be apart..... this swap should go better than the last time I did the clutch. Concrete floor, indoors with heat, with a transmission jack adapter for the vintage floor jack......

Keep your eyes peeled for a NP 435 D3 with the 4.56 first gear.wally426ci wrote:I'll be yanking the trans to go through it completely this winter. Yes, as John said, the close spaced 435 has 4 usable gears rather than the granny in the wide spaced units. Or better yet, find a 445, same gears but first is synchro. Not only is first usable, third is good to 60. Often found behind 383's.

Good luck finding a np445, and then good luck fixing it if it breaks. If you are dying to do a swap... do a nv4500. There are a million of those out there and its not really more work then a NP445 swap.

Is the 1st gear synchronized or not in a D3, and how do you ID one? My '67 D200 has a 4 speed and although first is pretty low it doesn't go too well starting out in 2nd, even with a 4.11 rear. I wonder if I have a D3? 1st is not synchronized in my truck.Hobcobble wrote: Keep your eyes peeled for a NP 435 D3 with the 4.56 first gear.

EDIT - a little searching around answered my question. I must have a 4.56 first in my truck because I don't get out of first until 10 mph or so, and it's not happy starting out in 2nd unless I really work the clutch.

Re: 68 NP435 - any gearing changes available?
You must, because I have the granny tranny in my '84 and with 3.55's in the axles I don't think it'll even DO 10mph in 1st 3rd is also only good until about 40-45, and when I do that the old Slant sounds like it's going to explode.
Edit- On the other hand, it's absolutely spectacular for plowing snow. Drop it into low range & low gear and I'm turning 64.5 to 1!

the tag on the door jamb will show if you have the close ratio 435D. they are great for towing. but no 1st is not synchro. doesn't need it. just something else to break. non synchro is stronger than synchro. I think that is why dodge stayed with the NP420 for so long.JLeather wrote:Is the 1st gear synchronized or not in a D3, and how do you ID one? Re: 68 NP435 - any gearing changes available?
My door tag says " 4SYN NPROC 435"
Re: 68 NP435 - any gearing changes available?
then probably not the close ratio but someone could have put one in. is there any tags on tranny?JLeather wrote:My door tag says " 4SYN NPROC 435"

As I recall.... the tranny has the I.D. tag on it.Kaegi wrote:then probably not the close ratio but someone could have put one in. is there any tags on tranny?JLeather wrote:My door tag says " 4SYN NPROC 435"

Re: 68 NP435 - any gearing changes available?
my door tags have always specified 435 or 435D or 435D3 etc. I don't think the D is any different than the D3 but maybe a whole other set of ratios???Hobcobble wrote:As I recall.... the tranny has the I.D. tag on it.Kaegi wrote:then probably not the close ratio but someone could have put one in. is there any tags on tranny?JLeather wrote:My door tag says " 4SYN NPROC 435"

if you look through the registry gallery at tags you will see them. I never checked any of my trannies for a tag tho
I even saw one tag in the reg that was 420D! might be a close ratio 420.
