metal gasket betwixt in/ex manifolds?

Post by brothermo »

hey kids-

i'm ready to put back together the manifolds, and i'm remembering a metal gasket that went between the two. this would be one of the parts that the engine rebuild place lost along the way. am i imagining this part? if not, any ideas where to get one, or how to fabricate one?

also, i am still one the hunt for spark plug wells and the studs and tri washers for the manifold to block mounting. any ideas are greatly appreciated.

lastly, it's freakin' hot in texas. i love it.

kindest regards,

brothermo

The metal gasket between the intake/exhaust should be avalable, but you may have to get a the int/exh kit
to get it, call around.
Be sure both surfaces are clean, I also use
a little copper RTV on both sides and do not
tighten the bolts till manfolds are tight to
the head.

Other than finding a yard that has a /6 in it
and getting the donuts/triagles I have no
idea were to go for them other than a yard, but there are still lots
of 225's around.
I think I could come up with the wells if you can't
find a 74 or earlier engine down there, maybe even
the rest since I'm part out a \6 truck right now.

my neighbor in co has a point (in fact, the one time annually that i do see a sweptline truck, it is my proven habit to follow it to its destination, just to bend the ear of the owner - everybody likes to talk about their trucks)

that said, i'm going to head down to the best salvage yard in texas (john's salvage), which has the largest collection of old us vehcles this side of cuba. maybe i'll get lucky. one way or t'other i let y'all know. thanks.

I'm teaching at Austin Community College. Do you live in Austin? What kind of dogs did you pick up?

flywheel and axle

Post by brothermo »

the vet thinks they're a collie/spaniel mix. they're super mellow, and clearly intelligent. not a bad deal, altogether.

named 'em flywheel and axle, given their previous home.

Get the Remflex gaskets. Instead of the metal one between the two manifolds it'll be a thicker composite gasket that seals better. Also the manifolds to head gasket will be a thicker composite material to guarantee you wont have vacuum and exhaust leaks as long as your manifolds are flat. I went round and round with Napa's kits because the gaskets were too thin. These other ones have worked for years.

Remflex gaskets are the good stuff. However, if you're cheap like me, PM me your mailing address. I should have a couple of the stock stamped steel pieces laying around, and I'd be glad to drop one in an envelope for you.
