Did the factory put primer on the bottom of the cab?

Post by soopernaut »

Yesterday I took a wire wheel and removed all the dirt and grime from the bottom of my cab. Under all this dirt was some nice Orangish-Brown primer. This truck didn't rust from the underside as it looks brand new. The rust in the cab mounts and a few pinholes in the floor came from the top. So did the factory apply this primer or did a previous owner do it?

I think they did :thinking most of my trucks have something. My 71 w200 is pretty strange tho, its Tor Red (red/orange) but the underside of the bed and cab it was sprayed sublime green!! The truck has the original paint, never been resprayed. Im thinking the truck was built on a monday or something  They probably started spraying it and looked at the build sheet and said oops its suppose to be Tor Red. :joker

I was beginning to think:

A. Nobody has been under their truck.

B. The bottom of everybodys' trucks are too dirty to see.

C. Nobody found primer so they couldn't say for sure.

Ya I'll agree with the dirty part  Because of grease and road grime you can only see green on mine in a few areas.

almost all of my trucks have green on them underneath. Im not so sure on the 62's, but all the newer ones I have do. I was just under my 69 that I pulled the cab off to snadblast the frame, and it along with the box is mint green on the bottum side.
I think the 65 I have is a rusty brown color, and it is airforce blue on top.

I would doubt any were sprayed but much as todays autos are eletrostatic dipped into a vat of primer, then on down the assembly line for paint.Ever see some cars today, open the hood and see primered firewall and inner fenders as the hoods aren't opened when painted.I think this is one reason todays cars/trucks rust out so bad as they get a primer coating underneath and thats it...not good in our salt covered roads here in the Northern winters. :pale .......pat

This is interesting that many are finding different colors on the bottoms of their trucks. Especially all the Sublime green which wasn't a common Sweptline color. Under my Orangish-Brown is bare metal. I think it is primer but I guess it could be paint. Maybe they painted the bottoms with extra paint and forgot to paint my truck. :thinking

When I was cleaning mine for sandblasting, there was one area that was covered with grease, and under it was perfectly preserved kinda green paint. Certainly not the orig. color, but I didn't think it was primer or undercoat. Puzzling. Now I gotta go look for a pic of it, not sure I have one.

My 71 has a green color coming through on the bottom of the bed too  , but i do believe this truck has been repainted at some point because the paint job absolutely sucks, also noticed a little coming through on the door :thinking
