brought my Polara home...

Post by slick »

So my wife and I decided to sell her daily driver Jeep liberty. We were sick off paying for it and decided to get rid of it. She has really been wanting something older for her driver, but be safe for the kids. I had a few cars in mind that were for sale locally. Then she asks, why are we looking for another car? Why don't we just bring your Polara up to our house. Fast forward a couple weeks and here we are. I got this car when I was 15. Did a cheapy restore in high-school and another repaint in college. 20 years later here I am! Undecided how deep I will be getting into this, but I want it to be clean, safe, and reliable ..

Very Cool car. I like it as much as my 65' Satellites.
Disc breaks and sway bars are worth every penny, The beast way to do Disc breaks are with the mopar action set up.
Keep me up to date, I love early B bodies.

For a "driver" restoration, I would just keep it as simple as possible. New Brakes, Hoses, engine tune up, etc like that stuff to make the car safe and reliable. Add seat belts if they were not yet added at that time by Chrysler Corp. As for paint? I would strip the car down to bare metal and start over because it sounds like you already have a couple of paint jobs on it. The more $$$ you spend on it... the less you will want to drive it to the mall... or shopping centers.

Looks like a great car and my hats off to you for keeping it all this time. My first car was a '65 Ply. Fury III which I sold to buy a '70 Challenger 440 SIX-PACK 4-speed, with a Dana 60... Yeah, sold that one too! :banghead

Keep it simple but definitely upgrade brakes to disc and sway bars to increase handling. Keep it reliable for the (BOSS) wife.

Glad to here it. My wife did the same thing not long ago, replaced her newer car with a sweet `66 Coronet wagon. She smiles everytime she gets in it. 20 mpg too.

Keep the pics coming. :Thumbsup

Agreed. 66' "b" bodies are still light.
Tires are better than old days, New ignition, air cleaners, and oils help with milage too.
wasn't uncommon for people with Heavy Chryslers, tall gears and 383 or 440 to get 18mpg in the old days, I think lots of room for them to be better with new parts.
new carburators, cam grinds, engine balancing, intake & exhaust upgrades not only make more power but when tuned properly help with milage. Remember you have to pick parts for a daily driver and not racing or high performance.

Don't forget stuff like Cold air intakes and Overdrives. it all helps.

That is cool. My wife loves the old Mopars but it would have to be restored already with a/c and efi to get her to drive it. Plus it would have to fit 3 car seats! :joker

I just put an 03 hemi and 5 speed auto into a 64 dodge polara. A narrowed 8 3/4, alterkation coilover rack front end also. Four wheel discs. I need to snap some pics. My good phone downladed the broken screen app, so all the pics I have are on it, hopefully I get it back before the cars owner picks it up.
Sure is nice just starting it up and it purrs like a kitten, and it has 400 hp. I just have to finish up the shifter and picking up the drivesahft and its done.

I agree! Nice car. That year of Polara is my second favorite Mopar of all time, right behind a '70 Cuda. My grandparents had a '64 and sold it to my dad, and we had that car for a long time. One of the meanest front ends out there! Have fun with the new old daily ride! :Thumbsup

Cageman that sounds awesome! Those alterkation kits are big money. Should be pretty awesome. You need to post some pics or email them to me!

That's going to make a sweet driver! Simple, safe and reliable. The older cars seem to get a bad rap from most people these days about that, but a least I can diagnose and repair mine myself with minimal tools. I bought my wife a 72 TravelAll 4wd back in July, and she seems to like driving it. But right afterwards, we got pregnant again, and it was too tough for her to climb up into it with the small lift kit that's on it. Now that the baby is here, it probably won't be long before she's in it nearly every day. Well, that is after I get the GM TBI conversion installed and tuned. The only other request was A/C. No prob! :Thumbsup
