starter engages when battery is connected
starter engages when battery is connected
So I'm getting everything hooked back up, and the starter fires up as soon as the battery cables are connected. I pulled the starter and had it checked - no problems. Any ideas? Are there some good ways to track down the gremlin?

Starter relay fried??? or crossed wires somewhere. Unplug ign switch & see if it makes any difference.

The relay could be bad out of the box, I've had that happen before. I pulled the ignition switch, starter still came to life as soon as the battery terminals were connected.712edf wrote:Starter relay fried??? or crossed wires somewhere. Unplug ign switch & see if it makes any difference.

I know it sounds obvious but make sure the battery cable at the relay isn't touching the other post. I hate to admit it but I did that once and it drove me nuts until a buddy pointed it out. Mike

Yes. He still does but I have a few I remind him of! Mike

Mike, thanks for saving me from myself. The ring terminal of the battery cable was touching the post to the smaller gauge solenoid wire. Ground the ring down so that it was well clear of the post, and everything appears to work as it should. Thanks again for your help!

Glad it worked for you! Mike
Re: starter engages when battery is connected
Ha! Mine did that too, it was driving me nuts, my mechanic friend said it had to be the flywheel, "no way it could be electrical".
Well I showed him

Re: starter engages when battery is connected
Funny the EXACT thing happened to me last week. Luckily none of my buddies were around to point that out.
Although one was there on Saturday when I tried to check spark, by unhooking the coil wire on the COIL end!!!
