jag ifs
jag ifs
I read a thread on the hokey @#% message board about putting a jag IFS under the F-1 Fords. They have a frame width of 34", it looks like my 63 D 100 is about 36" and this may work for the dodge also. They say the 73-84 Jag woks best. They come with 5 on 4 3/4 bolt circle but you can change that. Also most replacement parts are spicer, and are on the shelf. Has any body here tried this swap?

Well since the Jaguar is a foreign car that is/was an expensive vehicle I don't think finding a donor car will be that easy. Many of the people who posted on the HAMB live in foreign countries where these cars are more plentyful. There are many available swaps and you can make just about anything work depending on your tools, knowledge and skills. Lots of people use parts from vehicles they have access to and that is why certain swaps are more common than others.
Have you looked at the Crown Victoria, Diplomat/5th Ave/Gran Fury, Volare/Aspen, Aerostar, 70-81 Camaro, 72-93 Dodge truck, C-body, Cordoba, etc for IFS swaps?

According to the measurements here: Re: Jag IFS measurements needed!!! Please........ and those previous in this post I can't see how it would work. The frame is just too wide.

Re: jag ifs
If the sweptline frame is 36 like the OP stated, it probably wouldn't work without modifying the stock frame. I suppose you could notch the crossmember another inch on each side.Dood wrote:According to the measurements here: Re: Jag IFS measurements needed!!! Re: jag ifs
My take exactly. But the amount that would have to come out seems big enough to make me worry. As always Soop, you are the IFS wiz.

Re: jag ifs
It might be too much to take out. The other option would be to box the sweptline frame and notch it as well as notching the Jaguar crossmember. If you did this swap you would have a 5 on 4.75 bolt pattern with a 3? inch hub diameter. It probably isn't the best swap for a sweptline.
Dood, you seem to be doing a lot of research on IFS swaps. Is this the route you plan on taking with your truck?

Re: jag ifs
I have some problems with my front end. I am trying to decide between rebuilding what is there or going a more modern direction that has discs and more readily available parts.

Re: jag ifs
I looked into it a lot. And up here in my neighbour hood you can pick up old jags cheep. But as for parts availability, simplicity of install, easy to add air ride to and completeness I really think the crown Vick is the way to go if your keeping your frame rails

Re: jag ifs
Thanks. I hear great thing about the c.v. But haven't found an eligible donor ata yard to measure. I'm also a little worried there will be a several inch drop in ride height with the c.v.

Re: jag ifs
One thing that isn't mentioned much is the frame height in relation to the height of the IFS. There is a guy putting a Crown Vic IFS in his Travelall and the original frame isn't as tall so he has to make spacers.

Re: jag ifs
Excellent point. I have done the aerostar ifs measurements and the frame height on the ford is larger tha ours iirc, but I'm at the farm and away from my swepty. I can post those when I get back home.

According to this page, the c.v. Is 32 between bolts: Re: Crown Vic IFS - Brought it home!

Re: jag ifs
We had a member here attempt the CV swap and he had to modify his frame to get it to work. The guy doing the IH Travelall had to narrow his frame a 1/2 or 1/4 inch.
I see that the holes are slotted on the passenger side.
I found something that says the Aerostar crossmember is 36.25" between obstructions. If this is true, it might be the only known factory IFS that won't require frame modifications. The later Dodge truck splice probably isn't that bad either if you are willing to cut your frame.

Re: jag ifs
I agree, the frame splice, like you did is very slick.
I can't recall, but I thought the aerostar required no sweptline frame mods, unless you count motor mounts or you want a ride height change. One does probably have to notch the aerostar crossmember to change the r&p angle.

I agree, if the measurements I posted are correct. You said you did some Aerostar measurements as well.Dood wrote: I can't recall, but I thought the aerostar required no sweptline frame mods, unless you count motor mounts or you want a ride height change. Re: ifs notes
I wonder if we should do a new thread with all of these data....
OK, let's start with my Aerostar notes. These were approximate and I did the best I could given the picknpull, my fat max, the engine location, dripping with sweat, etc. Make your own or you can't sue me.
Measurements in inches at 2WD axle center line. Approx. to 1/8.
Frame height: 5.125
Frame width: 2.875
Frame rail to rail (inner): 31
Center of hub to frame bottom (very approx): ~6
Back of rotor to back of rotor 58.125
back of rotor to center of hub ~ 5

What about distance from outside of frame to other outside of frame?

Re: jag ifs
2.875 (frame width) + 31 (inner frame to frame) + 2.875 (frame width) = 36.750
Just about perfect except that I would want to repeat these with the whole unit dropped from the aerostar to be more exact.
