Hey guys,
I have a 1970 318.
I'm getting a tapping noise when I start up the motor cold. It only lasts for a couple seconds. If I give it a rev or two it goes away almost immediately.
I read that running a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil could possibly help.
Anybody had experience with this or have any advice on how difficult this repair to do yourself or how much it will cost for a professional repair?
I feel like my gas mileage has been worse lately. Even though the tapping only lasts a couple of seconds could my lifter be sticking even when it's warm and not making noise?
Any advice or opinions is appreciated.

Some of the 318's I have seen have a remote filter location; does yours have this or is it still on the side of the engine?

Not super difficult to fix. You can pull a lifter out with a magnet and replace it. But it really is not a huge deal. Marvel has long been claimed as a cure for this. My lifters bleed down after about a few weeks of sitting. It will tick for a minute and goes away. When I replace my cam I will put in new lifters.
