aftermarket carb for 318
Any suggestions for a 4 barrel carb on a 318? My current 2 barrel is leaking so I thought I should just upgrade at this point. What do you guys have for suggestions?

Re: aftermarket carb for 318
My suggestion is the Edelbrock 1406. It may be a little large for a completely stock 318 though so you could get the 500 cfm version.

I have a 1406 on my 318 in the Dart. The 318 has a cam and flat top pistons. Make sure you get the calibration kit. Even with the kit I had to down size the jets/rods on both primary and secondary circuits. Good carb when it is tuned correctly. Craigsoopernaut wrote:My suggestion is the Edelbrock 1406. Re: aftermarket carb for 318
Worry about the intake first. There are 2-4brl adapters if keeping the intake.
I just did a 4brl swap on my LA318. The stock 4brl intake (1983) I used is heavy!!! Not as heavy as a Chevy inline six head, but close. Go aftermarket aluminum w/o EGR if you can. Lot easier to keep gaskets in place when installing. I'm using the 80's Carter AFB that was on an engine I bought. Still tuning. Stock carb would be better. I had to do some grinding on the primary intake runners to use the AFB. It bolted up fine & butterflies didn't hit with an adapter, but there was too much iron sticking out. Had to hurt flow. Plus I had to grind off the bottom cover to get all the carbon crap out & weld it back. If you can find a stock pre EGR manifold with 4brl carb, it is easy. Otherwise, aftermarket is better. And lighter.

Electric choke Holley-Autolite 500 2bbl off a 360-390 Ford. Use a swap plate to change the pattern as needed. If your truck has a slush-o-matic, you're on your own to make the kickdown linkage work...
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.

Re: aftermarket carb for 318
Almost all the local auto parts stores keep the Holley 2300 500 cfm carb in stock, as a two barrel, for about $200. Get the right adapter plate from Summit, and the automatic kickdown arm and you should be good...I am running one on the super six town wagon and the LA318 68 Utiline...but on the Utiline, I went with the summit stage 1 intake.

Re: aftermarket carb for 318
I have a 1406 and like it. There's a little bog as the secondaries open when cold, but that's about it.

Hola Monterey Park
The pick & pull Carburetor for/ from any 304 or 360 AMC Car or Jeep is also much the same as the spoke about
holley that is at a higher cost.

Re: aftermarket carb for 318
It has been a LONG time since I last saw a decent carb at a pick and pull...every BBD body I find is worn out and unrebuildable. That is why I went with the Holley 0-7448 350 cfm 2300 series carb. They work with minimal fuss.Duh wrote:Hola Monterey Park
