radiator core mounts

Post by brothermo »

In the process of getting a radiator built for the truck. The radiator I pulled out was not original and was rigged in place. Here's my question: are the radiator "ears" on an original radiator on the same face of the radiator as the water inlet/outlet? It seems like they should be in order to give the fan clearance. Other radiators that I have pulled from junkyards have the ears on the face opposite the inlets, which places the core closer to the engine. Thanks for any help. If anyone has a pic of an original radiator in place, that would be great as well.

I've seen them both ways, must have to do with year and engine?

Ok here are some pictures that might help. Note the brackets on the '65 vs '71. The '71 are reversed to give it more clearance. I know by personal experience that the fan is VERY close to the radiator on the early /6 trucks. My father an I lost two radiators due to broken engine mounts over the years.

First is '65 D100 /6 Factory fan and radiator

Second '65 D100 factory radiator with aftermarket fan (note this radiator had the fan go into it at some point).

Last is a 71 D100 /6 factory A/C with factory radiator.

Hope this helps.

The pics definitely help - thanks! So no fan shrouds on these radiators from the factory, eh? Have you had any issues with overheating?

Some trucks came with shrouds, some did not. I don't know weather or not there was a method to their madness? I've not had any problems running my trucks without a shroud, but I don't live in Texas, either...
